Welcome to Wade's Mill!
Wade's Mill is a working water-powered flour mill, c. 1750, built by Captain Joseph Kennedy, one of the early settlers of the Shenandoah Valley. James Wade bought the mill in 1882.
Wade’s Mill is one of the few remaining flour mills that still produces a wide variety of flours exclusively on mill stones. Unlike modern roller milling, stone grinding uses stone burrs to slowly crush and grind the entire wheat kernel into flour. This results in flour having all the natural vitamins, minerals, and protein found in the original wheat berry. Modern roller milling separates the wheat germ from the kernel, reducing vitamin and protein content which are then added back in the form of “enriched” ingredients. To naturally achieve whiteness, Wade’s Mill flour is sifted, not bleached.
The wheat for our flour is grown locally without pesticides and is freshly ground. We encourage you to try our products and experience the difference in taste and nutrition versus modern commercially processed products!
